Methamphetamine can seem like an ideal drug for some gay men due to its effects. Initially, it intensifies sexual experiences and temporarily alleviates many of the insecurities that gay men might feel about themselves and their place in the community. Where confidence is lacking, meth induces feelings of strength and empowerment. It replaces fear with assertiveness, sometimes even aggression. It transforms feelings of unworthiness into a mood-altering sense of narcissism. And where there is a sense of not belonging, it fosters a sense of connection, removing concerns about age, body image, or social status.
