From Las Vegas Tunnels to UK Streets: The Alarming Reach of Synthetic Opioids

I listened to a podcast today that described the devastating epidemic currently gripping America—an epidemic that has already taken the lives of nearly one-third of the population. For just two dollars a pill, people can get their fix. Beneath Las Vegas, miles of flood tunnels house groups of people using fentanyl. When it rains, some are washed away and drown.

The situation is even more dangerous now because fentanyl is often cut with other substances. Unless someone tests their drugs before using them, they truly don’t know what they’re taking. Hearing this really opened my eyes and made me reflect on some of my own past decisions around drug use.

The fentanyl crisis is affecting every age group in America, from kids as young as 11 or 12 to adults. And it’s not just in the U.S.—the podcast went on to describe rising cases in the UK involving synthetic opioids that are 200 to 300 times stronger than fentanyl.
