The meth comedown and my morning cup of coffee

Over the past twelve months, I’ve learned so much about myself—more than I ever expected. I’ve written before about how intense and revealing this journey has been. During my using days, comedowns were a regular part of life. After taking meth, the crash would hit hard: overwhelming fatigue, constant yawning, disassociation, low mood, sleeplessness, and even psychotic symptoms. And of course, the obvious solution was to just keep using—to stay high, to push through. That’s how the vicious cycle continued.

Naturally, you’d think that once you get clean, all of that disappears. No more drugs, no more comedowns—right?
Wrong.

One unexpected thing I’ve discovered in recovery is how something as everyday as coffee can bring on similar symptoms to a comedown. Heart palpitations, bursts of euphoria, anxiety, mood swings, even mild mania—these sensations can mimic the high and crash of meth. And with that, they can trigger flashbacks, making it feel like you’re reliving parts of your using days.

For me, it got to a point where I had to cut back. I now limit myself to just one cup of good-quality coffee a day—occasionally two. Since doing that, I’ve noticed a huge improvement. The unsettling effects have calmed down, and I feel more grounded.

Recovery isn’t just about quitting substances—it’s also about becoming deeply aware of your triggers and making choices that support your well-being. Something as simple as managing caffeine intake can make a real difference in staying clean and steady.
